“To Draw For Painting” for me means to draw in such a way that the painting to follow is already laid out as shapes filled with color. I think this requires tonal drawings rather than line drawings.
Some of my paintings have been less than I desired because they were based off of pure line drawing. Although these line drawings were well designed, the paintings that followed too often had shapes that were close in value. This prevented them from attracting and holding my attention.
Line drawings give the detail. Tonal drawings give the main ideas. How can I combine them into a single drawing that leads to a painting?
