Takashi Shuji…Japanese artist known for remarkable drawings with pastels.
Takashi Shuji draws objects on his work table such as pitchers, balls of wool, even fire extinguishers.
Rather than copying his subjects exactly, he works to express the character of each object and how it makes him feel, the essence of the object.
He works with pastels and an eraser much the way that a potter would work with clay; he adds and subtracts as needed and in a way modeling in two dimensions and establishing an outline. He stops when he gets to the bottom of the page, even if a shape is incomplete.
He was born with Down’s Syndrome.
